Another New Riq was written in Greensboro, North Carolina at the Jembe Institute during the summer of 1998. At that time, I was immersed daily in West African music and rhythms such as Manjani and Dundunba. The solo is in 12/8 time and features rhythms derived from the jembe, employing both cabaret and classical styles ("soft position") of traditional riq technique.

"Another New Riq" comes with a story. While attending the Summer Djembe Institute in Greensboro, N.C., Michael Williams took his djembe to Talking Drums shop for repair. While there, he noticed a rig on the shelf and proceeded to play it. Being able to play ideas on it that never came to him before, he purchased it and these ideas became the foundation for "Another New Riq." The piece is in 12/8 meter, and the dotted quarter = 160--168. Form, dynamics and rhythmic interest abound in this short solo. Anyone interested in the rig will find this well-written solo worth the learning experience and appropriate for a feature at a percussion recital.
